From time to time we refer to research released by Bersin & Associates (a US based research company specialising in all things OD, HR and Learning). We do not like to do this too often as we appreciate the data is focussed solely on research of US based companies.  However sometimes the research and findings are too interesting to ignore and for this reason I wish to draw your attention to two interesting topics that have been discussed by Bersin & Ass over the past month.

Tuition Assistance Programs
(referred to as Study Assistance Programs in Australia)

I have from time to time wondered about the return on investment for such programs, so it was I read with interest the Executive Summary of a research initiative undertaken assessing the ROI of such programs and how to ensure these are structured for maximum benefit.  If you have often wondered the same then read the Report.

Deep vs Wide Career Strategy
This is a BLOG entry by Josh Bersin (principal of Bersin & Ass) discussing the very real dilemma for organisations in structuring talent management strategies to account for a major shift taking place: organisations and individuals are changing their view what constitutes "career potential" - with a stronger focus on deep level of specialisation as opposed to wide levels of experience across an organisation. The majority of corporate careers have been structured on the traditional hierarchical moves "up the ranks" being promoted in seniority to manager, people manager and manager of a business. However today's reality is quite different, with lessening senior management positions and traditional hierarchies coupled with a greater need for specialisation.  Companies now need to find a way to develop, promote, and honour the specialist leaders: the individuals with deep levels of expertise who know more about certain mobile technologies or pharmaceutical markets for example than anyone else in the company. aCE talentNET has been working with one multi-national organisational that has been addressing this very challenge to great effect by introducing a Legacy Program to specialists that acknowledges their valued contribution to the company... it is but one small step in the wider Talent Management agenda, but an initiative that is working well nonetheless.  Read more about this dilemma.

I trust you find the above as interesting as I did.
