While I still haven't found my crystal ball, a few HR trends continue to
challenge the HR marketplace. In particular, HR practitioners continue to
grapple with the talent shortage which is supported by the falling
unemployment rate and the increasing number of job ads. This coupled with
an increasing number of long term employees opting for more flexible
working arrangements, often via transition to an 'Independent Contractor'
status means that companies are competing for an ever decreasing talent
pool. However, this talent pool increases exponentially if HR practitioners
and line managers alike become more flexible and innovative in the way they
view the labour market. The number of 'Free Agents' (refer Daniel Pink,
"Free Agent Nation") or independent contractors available for short, medium
& long term flexible contracts is significant, and contrary to popular
belief these experienced and high quality resources do not necessarily cost
a company more. In my recent experience "Free Agents" are willing to
significantly negotiate contract rates in return for a flexible working
arrangement that allows them to:
* work part-time AND / OR
* work across a number of clients at one time AND / OR
* meet regular family / personal commitments AND / OR
* work from home when appropriate AND / OR
* the list goes on!
In return companies gain the following:
* absence of 'on costs' (super, holiday pay, work cover etc)
* flexibility to control contract duration
* ability to 'resource up' only when the business requires support
* if structured correctly (with the right external partner) ability to
access a pre-approved Talent Network on which to immediately draw support
* access to highly skilled and experienced resources (often far
superior to what is available via the traditional full-time employee
employment structure)
The challenge therefore for HR practitioners is to form 'trusted advisor'
relationships with external partners that are in tune with their
requirements and more importantly, have 'been there done that' in terms of
working within the HR and Learning & Development environments. To discuss
how aCE talentNET can support you and your business with accessing 'talent'
please contact me.
